In an abundance of caution, the Stillaguamish Valley Genealogical Society has decided to cancel our monthly meeting for Tuesday March 10th at the library. However, we are investigating an alternative method of making the Mayflower presentation by Lori Lee Sauber available. Details will be provided as they develop.
This week we’re introducing you to Kathleen Kaldis (Genealogist, New England Regional Genealogical Consortium (NERGC) 2020 Director, Lecturer). She is a professional genealogist who is known as The Ancestor Finder. Her interest in genealogy started at a young age when she heard stories about how her great great-grandfather, who was born on Cape Breton Island, came to Boston to build Fenway Park. Her enthusiasm shines through when she shares her passion of genealogy with her clients and audiences.
Her classes will be as follows:
Friday, August 14
• 3:30 pm: Huzzah! There’s a Lineage Society for That!
Saturday, August 15
• 8:30 am: Land Ho! Calling All Mayflower Descendants
• 11:30 am: From Pilgrims to Pioneers: Researching Your New England Ancestors
• 2:00 pm: Folklore, Tall Tales, and Genealogy: Finding the Stories in Your Family Tree
In the year of celebrating the 400th Anniversary of the arrival of the Mayflower we’re sure you’ll find Kathy’s topics an entertaining learning experience.
If you have ancestors that lived in the Stanwood/Camano Island Washington area, you should check out the Camwood Genealogy Workshop group. They have compiled an index of obituaries from their area and make them available. Check out their research page for more information.
The February meeting will be Tuesday, February 11th at 1:00 pm. The speaker will be Richard Hanks, President of the Stanwood Area Historical Society. Mr. Hanks is related to President Abraham Lincoln through his mother Nancy Hanks Lincoln. The title of his presentation is: The Parentage and Personality of Abraham Lincoln. This presentation is free and open to the public. It will be held at the Stillaguamish Valley Genealogical Society Library at 6111 188th PL NE, Arlington, WA. We hope to see you there!
Stillaguamish Valley Genealogical Society genealogist, Jennifer Strickland, brought to my attention a YouTube live stream that you may be interested in. It is a Q&A about Verogen, which bought GEDmatch. The live stream is over but you can watch the recording on YouTube here.
It has come to my attention that a recommendation has been made to close the Seattle NARA and move the records to facilities in California and Missouri. You can read more about it here: https://mynorthwest.com/1670992/seattle-national-archives-closure-recommendation/ and here: https://mynorthwest.com/1680107/officials-historians-seattle-national-archives-closure-horrendous/?
If you wish to write to express your thought on this closure, you can write to:

Today’s meeting is CANCELLED due to the snow and we will likely be closed this Thursday as well. Please check our website to make sure we are open before attempting to come into the library.
With snow in the forecast, it is possible that we will need to close the Stillaguamish Valley Genealogical Society Library. Please check our website for information on closures; we will post there as soon as we know we need to close. Our upcoming meeting on Tuesday, January 14th may be affected.
